LA Electric Experts

Electrician in Hollywood

Hiring an electrician in Hollywood usually means work in an older house or apartment building, often on wiring that has been added to for decades. We tell you what is there and what it needs, and the price is in writing before anything is opened.

What we do for Hollywood homes and buildings

  1. Fault finding on old circuits. When a light or an outlet quits, we trace it back to the box and the splice that failed, which is where most electrical repairs in an older house begin.
  2. Panels that are past it. A fuse box, or a panel brand an insurer will no longer cover, is replaced as a panel and service upgrade.
  3. Light in plaster ceilings. Cutting recessed lighting into old plaster takes more care than drywall, and an attic above the room makes it much easier.
  4. A charger by a hillside garage. On a hill the garage often sits down at the street with the house above it, so the run to the panel can be long, and that length sets the price of an EV charger.

Older wiring in Hollywood houses

Many Hollywood houses went up in the 1920s and 30s, from the Spanish-style places in Beachwood Canyon to the bungalows and courtyard buildings in the flats around Hollywood Boulevard. Behind their plaster there is often knob-and-tube or cloth-covered cable, spliced over the years by whoever owned the house at the time.

Age alone does not make that wiring dangerous. The weak point is usually the box, where brittle insulation has been bent one time too many, and a circuit that died the day somebody changed a fixture is the classic sign. Our whole-house rewiring page explains how a rewire is staged while you keep living in the house.

Apartment buildings and courtyards

Many people in Hollywood rent. If you own a fourplex or a courtyard building, tell us how many units it has and where the meters are, and we will say what we need to see before we price anything. Tenants can call us too. The owner signs off before the work starts, and we are glad to ask them ourselves.

How a job goes

You get your price the same day you ask.

  1. Send us a line about the problem. It costs nothing and does not book a visit.
  2. We tell you if a photo will do. A clear picture of the panel and its label often gives us enough for a range.
  3. When we need to see it, we come out. We find the fault and write up the fix before anything else is touched.
  4. The price arrives in writing. What it leaves out is spelled out as plainly as what it covers.
  5. Permit and inspection are ours to arrange. You pay the city’s permit fee directly.

Hollywood questions

Does knob-and-tube have to come out all at once?

No. A rewire usually runs in stages, starting with the circuits that carry the most load, and the house stays livable between them. What forces the timing is more often an insurer or a remodel than the wiring itself.

Can you tell what panel I have from a photo?

Usually. The label inside the panel door names the maker, and that tells us whether it is one of the brands insurers write letters about. When we reply, we will say whether a photo is enough.
